It can be differentiated from many other species by its extremely pleasant and sweet aroma emanating from broken leaves, it reminds me of fruit loops :) It has a very distinct lime green foliage that also sets it apart from cattail and other marsh plants. This plant is a tough survivor that holds it own in the rough an tumble river and stream banks
