本スタンダードが意図しているのは，すべてのメカニカルインタフェースにておいて，モジュール性と互換性を確保しながら，技術革新を妨げないよう最小レベルの仕様を定めることである。本仕様におけるほとんどの要求事項は，最大および最小の寸法という形をとっており，（ドアメカニズムやキネマティックカプリングを除き）表面仕様が要求されることはほとんどない。FOUPに対する物理的インタフェースだけが規定されており，材料に対する要求事項やパーティクルなどの汚染限度は示されていない。本スタンダードに規定された容器は，密閉されたミニエンバイロメント用途を意図しているが，単にうまく設計された自動化インタフェースを伴ったボックスであるとの解釈でも構わない。
